Travel Tips to Ensure Glowing Skin

Before we set sail it is important to alter our regimen for different climates to ensure a beautiful complexion no matter what the itinerary.

There is nothing better than vacationing on a beautiful Caribbean island in the middle of winter.
Warm, sunny days may be ahead but preparing for the trip can be daunting. Not only do we need to pack the perfect outfits, we need to prepare and pack for our skin.
Before we set sail it is important to alter our regimen for different climates to ensure a beautiful complexion no matter what the itinerary.
There is a lot of helpful advice to protect our skin while we are on airplanes, but did you know that what we do for our skin 48 hours prior to flying also has a large impact on how our skin reacts during the flight?

A few suggestions for a pre-travel routine.

• A clean diet.
Cut out all refined sugars and carbohydrates.
These tend to contribute to water retention which is the last thing you want on an airplane.
Stick to proteins packed with Omega 3’s like salmon and sardines, which will help protect your skin cells from the trauma of bad air pressure and climate change. Also load up on of fresh fruits, vegetables and plenty of water. This will help your body cleanse itself of toxins enabling it to adjust to changes more readily.

A mini facial the night prior to or the morning of your departure helps to ensure your skin is for ready travel.

• Exfoliate, hydrate & protect.
A mini facial the night prior to or the morning of your departure helps to ensure your skin is for ready travel.
Begin with a gentle exfoliator to unclog pores, remove dead cells and improve circulation. This will encourage a healthier epidermis and allow for better penetration of your products.
I love Environ’s AVST Hydrating Exfoliating Masque. Follow with a facial mask for sensitive skin. These masks are always designed to hydrate, calm and balance the skin.
End with a facial oil such as Caudalie’s facial oils. They are ideal for balancing the protective layer of your skin and locking hydration in.

Tone down aggressive treatments like Retin-A and topical antibiotics for acne as these also cause sun sensitivity and may contribute to hyper-pigmentation as a result of too much sun exposure.

• Tailor your skin care products to your holiday destination.
As I’m sure your wardrobe is lightening up you may want to follow suit for your beauty products.
Acid based cleansers can disrupt the acid mantle of your skin, causing breakouts and sun sensitivity. Switch to a gentle cleanser that can safely be used twice a day.

Simplify your regimen by replacing your daytime moisturizer with sunblock and condense the amount of products you use. I use the same serum and eye cream morning and night.
In the evenings, apply a water based moisturizer or soothing facial oil.
Use a gentle exfoliator every other day such as Dermalogica Microfoliant to remove the build-up of sunblock and keep a calming mask handy for possible sunburns or flare-ups.

• Free yourself of make-up.
For me, going make-up free is a liberating bonus when I am on vacation but my vanity still calls.
I apply self-tanner and get my eyelashes and eyebrows tinted right before a trip. I also use lip tints with an SPF so they are always protected while looking rosy at the same time.

Invest in travel kits, they make packing beauty products a breeze.

• Invest in travel kits.
I always have a couple of different travel kits handy. They make packing beauty products a breeze and keep your skin care routines organized.
Two of my favorite kits are: Avene Revitalizing Hydration Kit, which includes a hydrating cream and serum. A no-rinse cleansing water and the Avene Thermal Spring Water.
Elemental Herbology’s Moisture Replenish Kit. I love this one because in addition to a cleanser and two moisturizers, it includes a gentle exfoliator and a muslin facial cloth for easy cleansing.

• Do as the locals do.
Finally, embrace your surroundings. Some of my favorite skincare products have been discovered while traveling.
Local ingredients and different laws allow for new facial experiences and warrant an added coolness when you return home using a product no one else has.

Bon Voyage!
Vanessa
