Terry de Gunzburg The genius of make-up
Since the launch of BY TERRY the talented Terry de Gunzburg has been enchanting us with her makeup, her sense for color and her flair.
Some encounters leave a lasting impression. It happened to me yesterday when I met for the very first time Terry de Gunzburg, the creator behind the skincare and makeup line BY TERRY. Terry de Gunzburg is a unique combination of talent, vision, joy, energy… a woman who loves her family and her work… a true jewel. She started her career at Carita’s where her talent was quickly noted. She became a Studio Makeup Artist and started to work with some of the most well-known photographers of the time, then moved on to work at Saint Laurent. Working closely with Yves Saint Laurent, she became the creator of his makeup collections for close to 15 years. During that time, she started developing such emblematic products as Touche Éclat. 2000 marked a turning point in her career with the launch of her own brand BY TERRY. Since then, Terry has been enchanting us with her makeup, her sense for color and her flair .
Clémence Von Mueffling Could you define the essential steps of a skin care routine? Do you recommend a “detox” routine to maximize your complexion glow before you apply make-up? Terry de Gunzburg The key word is ‘Purity’ : makeup removal should be a daily routine. I love to mix 3 makeup removers together. I apply them one by one, by layer, and I massage the skin for 3 minutes. These are the 3 minutes I dedicate to myself ! It’s a relaxing time. I rinse well and with a lot of water. Then I apply a toner by hand. My skin already radiates. I then apply some serum. The serum works faster. It tightens the pores of the skin. Then I use a cream. Last, but not least, I apply some makeup but not much. This basic treatment provides radiance to the skin, it gives you a healthy look. I then apply concealers and I massage them in depth. I am a true believer of less is more as far as makeup is concerned. I am on a quest for glow with or without the help of colors. It is the result of a cosmetic approach mixed with good habits. We all know that drinking alcohol, eating lots of bread and sweets is not good for the skin. But if you get rid of all the things that bring you pleasure, you will find yourself quite empty. Balance and discipline are the answers.Wear some bright red lipstick, redesign your eyebrows and you’ll get another look: Ava Gardner style. It automatically gives you the attitude that comes with it!
CvM Do you have any beauty advice that has been transmitted to you from mother to daughter? TdG It’s all about cleaning, hydrating, protecting. Protecting yourself from the sun is essential. I have been protecting my skin from the sun since I was 25 years old. Also, and if you are in a bad mood, try wearing some bright red lipstick, redesign your eyebrows and you’ll get another look: Ava Gardner style. It automatically gives you the attitude that comes with it! CvM You travel a lot because of your work. Do you have any anti-jet-lag advice and what products do you always include in your carry-on? TdG I never drink alcohol when I travel. I drink a lot of water with a splash of lemon when I’m traveling by plane. No sugar at all. But lots of carbs. Fresh squeezed orange juice in the morning, with lemon and a little bit of honey. In general, lots of fruits, blueberries and anything gluten-free. As soon as I arrive at destination, I try to adapt to the time-zone of the country. This allows me to be ready, even if I feel a bit tired. I always have some By Terry rose balm with me. It’s an icon for me. And I always carry a bottle of Huile Prodigieuse NUXE (Multipurpose dry oil).
Work on your eyelashes, so that they make your eyes look brighter and brush your eyebrows with Eyebrown Mascara.
CvM The essentials BY TERRY for a quick morning makeup? TdG 1st step – Skin care treatment: Cellularose Baume d’Eau, which hydrates 24 hours a day and clarifies the skin. 2nd step – Expert Complexion Booster Brush: To blur the dark shadows around the eyes. Use also the brush on the face. (note: this brush gives you a perfect skin, it is also known as ‘foundation for the helpless’.) 3rd step – Work on your eyelashes, so that they make your eyes look brighter. Brush your eyebrows with Eyebrown Mascara , a mascara especially designed for eyebrows (it is a tinted mascara which fills the eyebrows and shapes them.) 4th step – Add a touch of blush. 5th step – For the lips, you have the choice between Baume de Rose and a gloss CvM Is there a new product in the works that you would recommend to our readers? TdG I recommend two products for the face and lips that add a very light touch of color. Cheek to Cheek – A syrup blusher with pure Cherry water. A two-in-one make-up. In the calm water version, the watercolor effect blush is like a barely tinted splash, whilst once shaken to create “troubled water” version, correcting micro-prisms float to create a more sheer finish on your cheeks. Tint to Lip – A texture like true watercolor. A vibrant splash of vitality that plumps, protects and gives a sensual color infusion.
