A Jet-Setter’s Guide to Staying Healthy On-The-Go

Health and wellness is a lifestyle that can be practiced no matter the airport, time zone, or climate in which we find ourselves. Here are 10 tips and tricks to help you plan a gorgeous getaway.

Maintaining your gorgeous physique and healthy eating habits is a daunting task during a summer of travels – to many, it may even seem impossible.
Stepping outside of our city walls, however, does not mean throwing our healthy practices to the wind.
Health and wellness is a lifestyle that can be practiced no matter the airport, time zone, or climate in which we find ourselves.

As retreat guides and world travelers, we understand the struggle of staying well while we travel. Luckily, we have perfected some basic guidelines to keep us feeling happy and healthy- regardless of what palm tree we are lounging under or what mountain we are climbing.

Whether you decide to jet-set this summer or take a few impromptu road trips, this checklist of tips and tricks will help you plan for a gorgeous getaway!

1. BRING A WATER FILTER AND GLASS WATER BOTTLE- EVERYWHERE
Traveling to new places with unique cuisine often persuades us to overeat, and this can wreak havoc on our digestive systems.
Taking frequent sips from a bottle of filtered water helps prevent both these issues by reducing cravings and keeping our digestion regular. Plus, staying well hydrated keeps our bodies energized and our skin glowing! Since the sanitation standards in different countries are not always up to par, be sure to bring your own water bottle with a filter.

A comfy pair of sneakers encourages walking and running. These extra steps will make a huge difference to your health.

2. PACK COMFORTABLE CLOTHES
Sure your strappy high heels might be perfect for summer, but the blisters they give will have you crawling back to your hotel room instead of truly experiencing your travel destination. A comfy pair of sneakers encourages walking and running. These extra steps will make a huge difference to your health. More importantly, you will get to see more land, meet the locals, and really immerse yourself in a new culture.

We always pack our Aloha Daily Good, doTERRA essential oils, Pangea Organics skincare products, incense, crystals, and, of course, our yoga mats.

3. DON’T FORGET YOUR WELLNESS GOODIES
The tiny bottles of shampoo that hotels give out sure are cute, but they’re often packed with chemicals and toxins that our bodies do not want. Instead of relying on these free, yet harmful, products, take your organic essentials with you!

4. STOCK UP ON HEALTHY SNACKS
There’s nothing worse than feeling hungry and drained midway through your travels with no healthy snack options in sight. Luckily, unsweetened dried fruits, nuts, and seeds are the perfect travel sized munchies to toss in your bag.
We keep the “triple threat” on us wherever we go: a bag of raw organic almonds, pumpkin seeds, and hemp seeds. All three are perfect on their own or sprinkled over a green salad. Check out our favorite market, Thrive, for dozens of healthy snacks to buy in bulk.

Toting along a bunch of fresh kale is a little ridiculous, so we opt for tasty kale chips. You can make a big batch before you go or pick up some already made chips from Brad’s Raw or Natural Savory Snacks.

5. SKIP THE IN-FLIGHT FOOD
Airlines are notorious for offering nasty, sodium-laden, over-processed, and preservative-crammed meals, so skip them altogether!
We never board a plane without a bag full of greens. Toting along a bunch of fresh kale is a little ridiculous, so we opt for tasty kale chips. You can make a big batch before you go or pick up some already made chips from Brad’s Raw or Natural Savory Snacks.

6. SHOP LOCALLY
Most countries grow a lot more local produce with a lot less chemicals than the United States does, so take advantage of being in those areas. Check out local markets with fresh and delicious fruits and veggies to snack on. Plus, just imagine all the new yummy recipes you could pick up from a local juice bar, health food store, or farmers market.

7. STAY AT A HEALTH DESTINATION
Ensure you don’t fall off the wellness bandwagon by checking out the retreats that your travel destination has to offer. Chances are they will have an all-inclusive retreat offering not only fresh, organic foods but fun activities like yoga, Pilates, hiking, and spa services. These wellness destinations support your healthy lifestyle, so you don’t have to give up any of the habits you work so hard at home to maintain.

Research exercise classes in the area for amazing opportunities like salsa dancing, yoga in the jungle, and kickboxing with the top foreign coach.

8. FIND THE LOCAL EXERCISE GURU
Traveling to exotic locations opens many doors to new experiences. Why can’t one of those be the front door to a local gym? Research exercise classes in the area for amazing opportunities like salsa dancing, yoga in the jungle, and kickboxing with the top foreign coach. Plus, you never know what new friends will lie down beside you for a beachside Savasana.

9. EAT ORGANIC
Eating real, clean food is what keeps you feeling best at home, and it will be no different when you travel. Sticking to fresh organic foods will keep you energized and happy throughout long and exciting days of sightseeing. Call over the jogger on the beach or the biker on the street and ask them for their favorite local restaurants. Chances are these joints serve up the tasty organic dishes you’re after.

10. SHARE SMALL BITES
Why commit yourself to a one, single dish when you can get a little taste of everything? Sharing food at the dinner table while on vacation (and even at home, for that matter) is our favorite way to experience many different regional tastes while sticking to smaller portions. Tapas are a great for this and certainly do not be afraid to order an appetizer as your meal- it will be plenty, we promise.

AND, FINALLY, OUR FAVORITE TIP…

Always remember to stay balanced, and we promise that you will feel clearer, fresher, and more vivacious wherever in the world you choose to bliss out.

…DITCH THE “VACATION” MENTALITY
Traveling makes it so easy to declare “When in Rome!” and throw out your wellness lifestyle. However, this tends to be downright unhealthy. That bread and butter that causes overnight weight gain, severe bloating, and an all-around unhappy belly is not going to make you feel any different no matter what language it is ordered in. Always remember to stay balanced, and we promise that you will feel clearer, fresher, and more vivacious wherever in the world you choose to bliss out.

Take a look back through these tips and you will realize that none of them are dramatic shifts from the healthy lifestyle you are already living. Bring the wellness mentality on the road with you and truly enjoy your vacation- you deserve it!
