The Best Acne Remedies food & water

Personal experience and the professional advice from Mount Sinai’s own Dermatologist, Dr. Graf, combine to offer you the most comprehensive skincare advice.

There is no one solution to acne, and as many of us know, it often takes up to a few years to figure out what works for each of us. Dry or sweaty skin, bad diets, eczema, deep pores, bad shampoo, and so much more can trigger the impossible, red splotches that distract from natural beauty and pillage perfect self-confidence.

When it comes down to it, sometimes looks do matter. Lean in as 8 years of personal experience and the professional advice of Mount Sinai’s own Dermatologist, Dr. Graf combine to offer you the most comprehensive skincare advice.

A large element of treating acne is ensuring your skin is moisturized, and can heal properly.

First, it’s always important to have strong topical options. Far too often, however, acne medicine’s primary actor – benzoyl peroxide – dries out and irritates already frustrated skin. A large element of treating acne is ensuring your skin is moisturized, and can heal properly.

The thermal spring water included in Avène products make them soothing while treating other skin issues.

Avène Skincare uses thermal spring water as its main ingredient. Named after the town that hosts this magical water, Avène harvested this liquid gold to share with the rest of the world. Dr. Graf describes its ability:

“Eau Thermale Avène has a center in France which treats doctor-referred patients with inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis due to the soothing minerals in the spring water. The thermal spring water included in Avène products make them soothing while treating other skin issues. The water also has anti-redness benefits.”

For the past few weeks I have tried two of Avène’s skincare products: Extremely Gentle Cleanser Lotion, and Cleanance Expert. Immediately after washing my face, I applied the Gentle Cleanser as a moisturizing basis, and followed with the Cleanance Expert for blackhead treatment. After about two weeks, my complexion looks more even, and the hot spots on my chin have cooled off.

For those with adult acne, Dr.Graf recommends Manuka Doctor as they have honey, so it is extremely hydrating. For teens with oily skin she recommends Clean & Clear.

Now everyone has different skin, and the products that worked on mine may not work on everybody’s. According to Dr. Graf, Cleanance Expert tends to work for most people, “great for even those with sensistive skin.” Addressing blemishes at every stage, it “contains ingredients that are alternatives to Salicylic and Glycolic Acid. For those with adult acne, I recommend Manuka Doctor acne products. They have honey, so it is extremely hydrating. For teens with oily skin, I recommend Clean & Clear.”

Most often the true problems lie beneath the skin. Antibiotics do work, but they kill your gut and all that good bacteria your body works so hard to produce.

Though they are helpful, topical solutions don’t always get to the root of the problem. Most often the true problems lie beneath the skin. Antibiotics do work, but they kill your gut and all that good bacteria your body works so hard to produce.

Fortunately, I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to sacrifice your health for clear skin. In fact, your skin rewards you when you feed your body the best foods. No matter what your skin type, diet is often a largest source of your acne’s inflammation. Dr. Graf agrees, and reminds us that “inflammatory foods such as cola drinks, sugar, dairy products exacerbate acne.”

This past summer, when I was fed up with unhealthy antibiotics, impatient with my topical solutions, my mom convinced me to try Dr. Weil’s anti-inflammatory diet. It took a solid month to commit, but once I did, I immediately saw results. Nothing has ever worked so well for me. My skin is consistently clear, and if I slip up, my skin suffers the next day.
Here is what I do:

  • Limit added sugars and fried foods. Even that cliff bar with only 18 grams of sugar can make you break out. Instead, enjoy all the fruit you want (this also increases your fiber intake!)
  • Eliminate most dairy products, especially Skim milk, the enemy of clear skin. I use almond milk for my cereal and smoothies. The occasional Parmesan and natural cheese is completely fine.
  • Go low on gluten, but do not eliminate it. For example, I depend on thin pita bread and the occasional piece of Ezekiel toast.
  • Fish, fish, fish! I now take Omega-3 gummies and eat a ton of salmon. Try to limit (but not eliminate) your consumption of other animal protein.

In the many years I have faced the problem of acne, no combination has been stronger than this anti-inflammatory diet with Avène’s topical care.

So, if you find yourself frustrated, and feel like you’ve reached the end of your options, try one more time. In the many years I have faced the problem of acne, no combination has been stronger than this anti-inflammatory diet with Avène’s topical care. While the right foods make my body feel healthy and happy from the inside, Avène helps and heals my skin from the outside. Trust me when I say, the use of both these products has made my skin the happiest – and the clearest – it has been in years.
