The Detox Market

The highly curated selection offered by the Detox Market is one of the reasons behind the incredible success of the two eco-entrepreneurs Romain Gaillard and Valerie Gandury.

The highly curated selection offered by the Detox Market is one of the reasons behind the incredible success of the two eco-entrepreneurs Romain Gaillard and Valerie Gandury.
When they first met, their ambition was to create the first company to offer freshly made organic skincare adapted for each customer.
Customers loved it, but they also wanted more products, more advice.
With so many so-called green items out there, how do you know which one you can really count on?
This is how the 2nd step of their green adventure started.
They wanted to open the first store that would offer the best-of-breed items and nothing else.
They looked all over the world for products that could remove toxins and pollutants without affecting their efficacy, taste, and style.
Today The Detox Market counts 2 stores: toxin-free spaces that combine the Green California with a flair of Parisian Chic .

At the Detox Market, we made it our mission to raise awareness about the danger of using products containing parabens and other not-so-safe chemicals.

Clémence von Mueffling: Valérie, tell us more about your personal experience with skincare and parabens.

Valérie Gandury: Parabens are the most widely used preservative in the skincare industry. Recent studies conducted by researchers from the University of Reading in the UK found parabens in nearly 100 percent of all cancerous breast tumors, establishing a direct link between parabens and breast cancer. As a breast cancer survivor myself, and as a founder of the Detox Market, I think it is vital that all women know about the risk factors for breast cancer associated with the use of cosmetics containing Parabens. At the Detox Market, all our products are of course Paraben free, and we made it our mission to raise awareness about the danger of using products containing parabens and other not-so-safe chemicals.

CvM: How do you select your products? And how many brands do you represent today?

VG: We receive hundreds of products and very few make it to our selection. First, they have to be free of toxins. Second, they have to perform even better than regular ones. Third, they have to be pleasing to all senses, touch, feel, smell, sight. We carry about 20 brands.

CvM: The Detox Market is such a big success today, what are your plans for the future?

VG: We are looking at the possibility of opening 3 more stores in California.

CvM:Can you give us your 3 beauty routine tips?

VG: 1- Never go to bed without cleansing your face. Your skin needs to breathe at night in order to repair. No matter your skin type, use a cleanser that is non-foaming so you do not disrupt the delicate skin barrier.
2- For fast results, go for an oil serum. Because they are oil soluble (like the lipid-rich skin barrier), active ingredients that are carried by oils have a higher rate of penetration into the deeper layers of the skin, where they can repair, clear and stimulate at the cell level. To target a specific skin condition, try one of the super effective Serum Concentrates from Odacité.
3- Handle Eyes With Care: the skin around our eyes is extremely delicate because it does not produce any oil, it is the first area to get affected by environmental aggressors (heat, cold, pollution, sun). It is also the thinnest skin on the entire body, and the first area of the face where visible signs of aging begin to emerge. Start using a good eye cream in your early thirties.

Move: Life is movement, so do whatever it takes to include a FUN way to move in your schedule.

CvM: Can you share with us your 3 wellness routines?

VG:  1- Juice one day a week: This is the best way to get all your minerals and vitamins, boost your immune system and give your entire digestive system a well deserved rest. It sounds hard, but here is the easy way: do it over two days, start by replacing dinner (go to bed early, read a book, relax, and enjoy your juice). Next day, have only juice for breakfast and lunch and have a nice healthy dinner.
2- Move: Life is movement, so do whatever it takes to include a FUN way to move in your schedule. Fun is as important as move; it will help you say consistent and it will ease the process. If you are bored of your exercise routine, try something new. I just discovered aerial yoga and if I could, I would go every day ;-0)
3- Eat less meat and dairy. All studies show that the vegetarian diet is the healthiest one. So depending where you come from, start with one day a week and build up to at least 3.

CvM: What are your favorite places in L.A ?

VG: Walk in Topanga. For the last 9 years I’ve hiked Topanga with my dogs every morning for an hour. And every morning, I’m stunned by the beauty of nature, it never ceases to amaze me.
Restaurant: Gracias Madre. One of the most beautiful patio in LA serving an excellent organic vegan food.
Tea: Combine a fabulous visit with exceptional tea time experience at either the Villa Getty or at the Huntington Rose Garden
Anti-gravity Yoga: Try a level one at Up Flying Yoga. You will be amazed how aligned your body feels at the end of the class.
