Her whole figure can embody the pulse of a wave as the tug of the moon pulls and releases its foamy water. Through dance, Misty becomes something else, and her magnetic performance beckons her audience to move in their seats, sway their heads, and dance with her.
Every time she enters the theater, Misty tests the power of the human body. Every time she performs, Misty transforms the room into a glittering snowscape, a golden ballroom, an enchanted forest.
She was discovered at the age of 13 by Cindy Bradley, a ballet teacher working at her neighborhood Boys and Girls Club. Misty had been living in a motel with her single mother and five siblings when ballet found her. From that moment onward, she bounded into the world of professional ballet, studying with the San Francisco Ballet School and American Ballet Theater (ABT).
Perhaps the most difficult – and triumphant – moments in her entire career have come with the reminder that she was different from everyone else, but she is proud of that.
And now, Misty has become the first African American principal ballerina to ever dance for the ABT. In 2014, she made history as the first black woman to perform the lead role in ABT’s Swan Lake.
