Illustrated by artist Ugo Bienvenu, Mugler’s latest line of unisex cologne aims to “distort reality” and illuminate the hypnotic beams of an “olfactory rainbow” that knows no boundaries of gender. Notes of citrus, flowers, trees, musk, spices, and herbs only become more and more intense as they settle deeper into the pores of your skin and fill up the air pockets surrounding your body. You may find yourself trying to pinpoint aromas that exude more conventionally masculine or feminine traits, but there is no true answer, no true label. Each scent is appropriately packaged in electric and fluorescent, clear-glass bottles that come together to form a rainbow that rises above any of the limits, labels, and conventions that bind us on the earth below. Come Together
This fragrance begins with a light and delicate presence that becomes pleasantly more intense as it settles into your skin. The primary ingredients are white musk and green petitgrain– an oil derived from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree. This scent more closely resembles fresh flowers than wood to me, making this one of my favorite scents of the collection as I am a helpless flower child.
Love You All
Complete with white amber and blue licorice, this fragrance has a much more mature and distinct aroma despite the youthful presence of lemon that dominates the first spritz. It has a more tropical and woody finish the longer you let it settle, giving you a smooth and vibrant sense of sophistication. This cologne will surely take up space whenever you walk into a room, so have the confidence to take up space too!
Run Free
Perhaps the most earthy scent of the collection, Run Free is a forest getaway into notes of purple ginger, akigalawood, grapefruit, and bergamot. This cologne also distinctly exudes a fresh scent that reminds me of warm, clean laundry. Combined with sweet, soft undertones of citrus, this scent is effortlessly pleasant to deeply inhale and wear delicately around your neck.
Take Me Out
Summer may be over, but the beach is forever— at least when you have a bottle of Take Me Out on your dresser, which initially smells like sunscreen and kelp and warm summer days. Despite being apart of the floral family, I was not able to detect flowers in the scent profile until the cologne had time to linger and blossom. Soon it felt as though gardens were growing from my veins, as subtle hints of lavender and a commanding presence of basil steadily filled up the pores of my wrist.
Fly Away
With prominent aromas of wood and bamboo and underlays of pomegranate, grapefruit, and orange, Fly Away is appropriately named for all the places it takes you— all the scents it calls upon, all the layers and stages it undergoes, all the ingredients it uses to create an all-encompassing aromatic experience. Honey, Madagascar black pepper, vetiver, patchouli woods— fly away, take the fruits, plants, & spices of the world with you, and place them behind your ears for safe keeping.
